Locke Anderson Moody (1862–1938) of Albemarle, NC, was the leading contractor for many significant structures in Stanly County, including the 1892 Stanly County Courthouse, the Stanly Enterprise newspaper building, and the Albemarle Opera House—now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
When the Mont Amoena Seminary building burned on Thanksgiving Day in 1911, the Mont Amoena Board of Directors awarded the contract for the construction of a new brick seminary building to L. A. Moody at their May 1912 meeting. The school reopened in the fall of 1913, but Moody and the Mont Amoena Building Committee disagreed over compensation and on work that was not yet completed. Moody filed a civil action against the Trustees, and building committee members, Rev. Prof. J. H. C. Fisher and A.W. Moose. Moody claimed an additional $796.70 plus interest. The case was resolved by compromise, with the defendants agreeing to pay L. A. Moody $100 plus legal costs. The proceedings took place at the courthouse in Concord, N.C., on January 7th, 1917 with Judge B. F. King presiding and D. M. Furr acting as referee.
