Commencement at North Carolina College and Mont Amoena Female Seminary.

…  Miss Laura Efird, China Grove, N. C., representing the graduating class of the seminary, read her graduating essay. The addresses of the young gentlemen were well composed, and were delivered in a manner consistent with careful training, and were in every respect creditable to the college. The essay by Miss Efird showed depths of thought and excellence of arrangement, both of which won for her the praises of the audience.

Teacher Honored With Math Award

Salisbury, June 10 – Laura C. Efird, native of the China Grove section of Rowan county and mathematics teacher in the Raleigh high school for the past 18 years, has been notified of her election to membership in the American Mathematical Society.

She is the only public school math teacher in North Carolina who holds membership in this body and one of nine public school teachers in the entire United States so honored.

Miss Efird, an authority on geometry, is also author of a math text book. She was educated in this county, at Mt. Pleasant, and other institutions in the state, and holds a masters’ degree from Duke University.

Miss Efird, 86, School Teaher for 50 Years

CHINA GROVE – Miss Laura Christine Efird, for 50 years a school teacher specializing in math and geography, died Saturday at the Methodist Home in Charlotte.

She was born here January 18, 1878 [sic, 1877], daughter of the late Martin Luther and Elizabeth Sloop Efird.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Charlotte and was particularly active in the church women’s until her health began to fail.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews in this area.

Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran Chapel here Monday at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Harry Rau of China Grove and the Rev. Fred Ramseur of Charlotte will officiate. Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the service.
