Notes from Anna Mae Sensenbrenner Quackenbush, 20-21 Nov 2023.
I recognize one of the photos you have available. It is of Gram’s [Mae Matilda Earnhardt Wingard’s] best friend, Ruth Seckenger (sp.?) Miss Ruth would come and spend two weeks each summer with Gram on the farm. The photo is of the older woman who I recognized immediately. My mother was named for her…
…I visited her in her home near Savannah, Georgia when I was a young teenager, ‘69-‘70. I believe this photo was taken in her home. When I married, the first time (long sigh and frustrated huff!) Miss Ruth gave me an heirloom solid silver serving spoon. I use it every holiday.
____________
Ruth was from Rincon, Effingham County, Georgia. Both her and her husband’s families trace back to the Salzburger emigrants, a group of German-speaking Protestant refugees from the Catholic Archbishopric of Salzburg (now in present-day Austria) who immigrated to the Georgia Colony in 1734 to escape religious persecution.
Ruth participated in the Saltzburger Bicentennial Pageant in 1934.

The cast of the 1934 Salzburger Bicentennial Pageant on Labor Day celebrates the 200th anniversary of the landing of the Salzburgers who settled at Ebenezer. – Photo provided by the Georgia Salzburger Society, https://www.effinghamherald.net.
