Miss Sigmon Weds Mr. Smyre
NEWTON, Nov. 9. – Centering the interest of a wide circle of friends was the marriage of Mr. Macon Smyre, Jr., and Miss Madeline Sigmon, who were married at St. James parsonage early this morning.
Mrs. Smyre is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Sigmon, the former a prominent business man of the county.
Mr. Smyre is a young farmer and the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Smyre, Sr., the former one of the best known farmers of the county.
The young couple left immediately on a bridal trip. On their return they will be at home for the present wit the groom’s parents.

Balls Creek Class of ’28 Has Reunion
NEWTON – R. Max Lineberger of Morganton was host to a dinner party for the class of 1928 of Balls Creek High school Saturday evening at the Newton Elks club. Thirteen of the 14 members were present.
This was the first graduating class and the first year of the newly consolidated schools in the Catawba county area. At this time Balls Creek was considered one of the most modern facilities in the state.

Madeline Sigmon Smyre, 96, of Abernethy Laurels, formerly of Newton, NC, died Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Abernethy Laurels.
Born October 22, 1911 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late John Emmett & Eslie Deal Sigmon.
Mrs. Smyre was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Women’s Circle and a Sunday school teacher for many years. She loved gardening, flowers, taking care of baby calves and cooking. Mrs. Smyre was also a member of the Homemakers Extension for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Macon Smyre, a brother, Fred Sigmon; and three sisters, Nadine Eudy, Rebecca Young and Sue Henderson.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Betty Williams of Newton and Nell Houser & her husband John, Jr. of Maiden; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert & Nancy Smyre of Newton; five grandchildren, John Smyre, Laura Miller, Amy Lowman, Ellen Miller and Jason Moose; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Christine McGee of Hendersonville, NC and Myrtle Murphy of Groton, MA; and a sister-in-law, Mamie Sigmon of Newton.
A Service of Remembrance was held on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at St. James Lutheran Church. Rev. Michael Collins officiated.
Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were John Smyre, Rick MIller, Scott Lowman, Zachary Lowman, Rodney Miller, and Jason Moose.
