Box Supper at Barber School House
Notwithstanding the rain, there was a good crowd and the box supper at Barber schoolhouse Saturday night was a success. There were a number of real nice boxes. One brought six dollars. The proceeds amounted to $41.00 and some cents.
Miss Kate Barber, one of the teachers, offered a box of home made candy to the girl receiving the most votes for being the prettiest girl. Miss Pearl Thompson was the winner.

Welfare Board Gets New Member
SALISBURY – Miss Pearl Thompson of Cleveland has been appointed to the Rowan County Welfare Board to replace Mrs. S. Worth Freeze who is resigning effective in January.
Miss Thompson is a native of Barber and has served as secretary of the North Carolina State Grange since 1933. She operates her own farm at Cleveland.
She is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jones Thompson and taught in the public schools for several years after graduating from Mon [sic] Amoena Seminary in Mount Pleasant.
She has been listed in “Who’s Who in Organizational Executives” and “Who’s Who in Agriculture” in the Southeast.
In 1958 she was named “Woman of the Year” by the N. C. State Grange for distinguished service to the state’s farm people.
She served on the North Carolina State Board of Correction and Training from 1949-1955.
The other members of the county welfare board are Louis Carrigan and R. L. Chandler Jr. Appointees serve three-year terms.

Annie Pearl Thompson
Annie Pearl Thompson, 91, Spencer Residential Car, Spencer, formerly of Thompson Road, died Sunday (Jan 15. 1995) at the nursing center after several months of declining health.
Born Sept. 6, 1903, in Rowan County, Miss Thompson, a daughter of the late Hugh Jones and Sarah Eliza Myers Thompson, was a graduate of Mont Amoena Seminary. She once taught in Rowan County and Mount Pleasant. She was later secretary for the North Carolina State Grange for 50 years. A life member of Lebanon Lutheran Church, she was on the church council, taught Sunday school, and was Sunday school treasurer.
There are no immediate survivors.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Lebanon Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carroll Robinson. Burial at Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery, Cleveland.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church fellowship hall..

ROWAN COUNTY – Pearl Thompson died Sunday, January 15, 1995 following several years of declining health.
Miss Pearl, as she was known, was elected Secretary of the North Carolina State Grange in 1933 and served actively in that role for 56 years, until her retirement. Her work in the State Grange brought her into contact with State Grange leaders, including: W. Clarence Poe; W. Kerr Scott; Robert W. Scott; Harry B. Caldwell; Margaret Caldwell; Lloyd Massey; Jim Oliver; and present Grange Master Robert Caldwell. In addition, she was cousin to Jim Graham, Commissioner of Agriculture.
She was a graduate of Mount Amoena Academy and a retired public school teacher in Rowan County.
Her funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, January 17, 1995 at her life long church, Lebanon Lutheran in Cleveland, N.C. She taught Sunday School and had been a member of the church council. She is survived by two nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to her church or to the State Grange Youth Fund.
