Married on last Saturday at the home of the groom’s father, Mr. Poly Moretz in Boone, Mr. Ralph Moretz to Miss Verlie Winebarger of the Meat Camp section, the Rev. Jeffcoat performing the ceremony. Young Moretz is just out of school and his marriage came as a surprise to his friends. The newly weds were treated to an old time serenade Monday night. The Democrat extends congratulations.

Verlia Viola Winebarger Moretz (1907-2006)
Mrs. Verlia Winebarger Moretz, 98, formerly of Clinton, Tenn., died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Boone. She was born in Watauga County, April 4, 1907, a daughter of the late William and Maudie Proffit Winebarger. Mrs. Moretz was educated at the Winebarger School on Meat Camp and the Mont Amoena Female Seminary in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina (near Concord). She was a homemaker and raised a family of sixteen children, including four sets of twins, while living in Watauga County, Detroit, Michigan, Clinton, Tennessee and Beverly, Ohio. She had lived in Clinton, Tennessee for the past 22 years before moving to the Blue Ridge Assisted Living Center in Mountain City, Tennessee, three years ago. Survivors include 13 children, Virginia Cook and husband, George, of Beverly, Ohio, Charles Moretz and wife, Marietta, of Clinton, Tenn., Bill Moretz of Doraville, Ga., Paul Moretz and wife, Myrtle, of Clinton, Tenn., Glenn Moretz and wife, Mary Alice, of Arlington, Tex., Edwin Moretz of Charlotte, Jane Grubb and husband, Johnny, of Clinton, Tenn., James Moretz of Chicago, Ill., Estelle Dinan of Zanesville, Ohio, Jerry Moretz and wife, Wanda, of Clinton, Tenn., Roy Moretz of Boone, KayMoretz and husband, Leon, of Mount Holly, and Ray Moretz of Boone. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Survivors also include three sisters and two brothers, Arlie Winebarger and wife, Ester, of Montrose, Va., Mrs. Ward (Margaret) Miller of Boone, Mrs. John (Martha) Lookabill of Boone, George Winebarger of Boone, and Mrs. Burl (Lola Mae) Bowles of Lexington, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph McCoy Moretz, Sr., sons Ralph M. Moretz, Jr. and John A. Moretz, and an infant daughter, Velma Lee. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Jack (Blanche) Bryant, and five brothers, Albert, Henry, Howard, Monroe, and Walter Winebarger. Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 12:00 o’clock at Bethany Lutheran Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Tom Hehenberger. Graveside services and burial will be conducted on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Wood Haven Memorial Gardens in Claxton, Tenn., officiated by Pastor Steven Damos. The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 10:30 until 12:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 1030 Big Hill Road, Boone, N.C. 28607. Hampton Funeral Service are in charge of the arrangements.
