“Mama Lu was my great grandmother. She lived in the big house on South Union Street in Concord, NC with my Grandmother, Catherine and Grandfather, John Leslie Bell. My mother, Catherine was also brought up in that house with her brother Johnny Bell. I remember mama Lu as a very old woman who sat at the end of the long, long dining room table in her wheelchair dunking bread in a saucer of milk as the servants stood over her. There was a buzzer under the carpet and when she stepped on it it buzzed the kitchen and that is how they knew whe needed something. there was also a bell on top of the table that she would ring.”
