MOUNT PLEASANT – Miss Miriam Foil 88, died Friday, October 3, 1997, at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, NC.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, October 6, 1997, at St. James United Church of Christ with Reverend Chet Byerly and Reverend Jack Crater officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends will gather at her home from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 1997.

Miss Foil was born May 12, 1909 in Mount Pleasant, NC, a daughter of the late Dr. Moses Alexander Foil and Josephine Elizabeth Summer Foil. Miss Foil was a fifth grade school teacher, having taught at Mount Pleasant for ten years, Concord for eighteen years and Charlotte for twelve years. She was a graduate of Mont Amoena Seminary in Mount Pleasant and Catawba College in 1931. She was also a member of St. James United Church of Christ and did volunteer work at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital.

Gordon Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant, is in charge of arrangements.

Foil Estate Benefits College

SALISBURY – Catawba College has received a $50,000 gift from the estate of former Mount Pleasant resident Miriam Foil.

Foil graduated from Catawba in 1931.

The money will be added to the Dr. Moses A. and Josephine Elizabeth Summer Foil First Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, which Miriam Foil established in memory of her parents in 1989.

Foil’s father graduated from Catawba in 1889 and was a trustee from 1928 to 1944. Foil House, built in 1938 on the Catawba campus as a faculty residence, was named in his honor.

Josephine [sic. Miriam] was a fifth-grade teacher. She taught in Mount Pleasant for 10 years, Concord for 18 years and Charlotte for 12 years.

She died in 1997.
