Mrs. Gertrude Blackwelder

CONCORD — Gertrude Furr Blackwelder, 98, formally of 3084 Roberta Road, passed away quietly, Thursday, September 12, 2002 at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center in Albemarle.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Roberta United Methodist Church where she was a life long member. Rev. Deval Mason will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord from 6 to 8 p.m. At other times, they will be at the home of daughter, Dianne Hudson.

She was born in Cabarrus County on September 27, 1903, the daughter of the late Daniel Vernon Furr, Sr. and Sarah Blackwelder Furr. She was a 1924 graduate of Mt. Amoena Seminary in Mt. Pleasant and received a teaching certificate from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1937. She taught school in Cabarrus County for a number of years before becoming a wife and mother. For many years, she was very active in her church, taught Sunday school, served on many committees and the Administrative Board and active in the United Methodist Women and the Senior Citizens group.

She was married to the late Gus Edward Blackwelder who preceded her in death on August 27, 1977.

Survived by two daughters, Dianne B. Hudson and husband Ned; Sharon B. Ritchie and husband Gary of Concord and one stepdaughter, Clara B. Easley of Concord; four grandchildren, Melanie Hudson, Mark A. Small, Benjamin Small and Emily Ritchie and fourteen step grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Irene F. Little of Harrisburg, three brothers, John I. Furr, D.V. Furr, Jr., and Harold D. Furr all of Concord.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Rebecca Cochran and Kathleen Litaker, four brothers, Jacob Furr, Fred Furr, Ben Furr and Lawton Furr; three stepchildren, Lewis Blackwelder, Rachel Crisco and Mary Ellen Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roberta United Methodist Church building fund or the cemetery fund.
