ELLEN EVANNE C. HOLSHOUSER, b. Sept 23, 1870, m. Lewis D. Peeler, b. Sept. 24, 1866, d. Jan. 27, 1931. Children: Pauline Katherine – Peter Clifford Alexander – Mary Virginia, b. Dec. 22, 1909, d. June 10, 1911 – Lewis Alexander [Albert], b. Dec 19, 1913.

Ellen Evanne Holshouser Peeler was born on a farm near Rockwell, N. C. on September 23, 1870. She was the only daughter of Milas Alexander Holshouser and Sophia Peeler Holshouser. She attended Mt. Amoena Seminary, Mt. Pleasant and Marion College, Marion, Virginia. She taught school for several years at Organ Church. On May 18, 1897, she married Lewis D. Peeler. Her husband took over management of the Holshouser farm, and both were active leaders in their community. They were charter members of Emanuel Lutheran Church and leaders in the organization and work of this church. Mr. and Mrs. Peeler spent the first ten years of their married life on the farm but moved to Salisbury in January, 1907 where her husband had entered business with the Kluttz Grain and Provision Co. as its Secretary and Treasurer. This company finally became the Peeler Wholesale Co., one of the leading wholesale companies in this section. He entered other lines of business, among them the manufacture of soft drinks. The Cheerwine Bottling Co., a leading concern is the result of his labors. In 1921, he became part owner of the Yadkin Hotel and in 1926 took over the management which position he held until his death on January 27, 1931.

The Peelers were active members of St. Johns Lutheran Church where Mrs. Peeler taught a Sunday School class of young girls for many years. Her husband was on the church council and a member of the building committee for the present church. They were both leaders in their church and community.

SALISBURY, March 7 – Mrs. Ellen Holshouser Peeler, 89, died today at Rowan Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was a charter member of the United Lutheran Women. She was also a charter member of the Book Lovers’ Club, and member of the UDC, the Salisbury Woman’s Club and the Coffee Hour Club. She was a former officer of the Salisbury YWCA, and was active for many years in the PTA. She is survived by two sons, Clifford A. Peeler and Lewis A. Peeler; and a daughter, Mrs. Walter Lowe Tatum. Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church by Dr. Frank K. Efird, pastor, and the Rev. Robert Lineberger, assistant pastor. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
