Mrs. Dorothy Johnston Orr, 91, died Thursday, September 26, 2002 at Charoltte’s Carrage Club on Olde Providence Road.
The oldest of four sisters, she was born to David Luke and Agnes Cook Johnston on June 1, 1911 on the Johnston Family farm in Mecklenburg County.”Dot” graduated from the Mt. Pleasant Collegiate Institute and attended Queens College as a Costume Design Major.
In 1930, Dorothy married Thomas J. Orr of Matthews, NC. The couple settled in Charlotte, and had three children, and were a founding family of The Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church. After Mr. Orr’s untimely death in 1946, Mrs. Orr took over the family business, T. J. Orr Surveyors.
An avid gardener, Dot loved working in her yard and will be remembered by neighbors and friends passing by her home on Selwyn Avenue. Her other passion in life was sewing. She was a true artist as a seamstress. We are reminded of her in Scripture – Proverbs 31:25 ‘She sews for the poor, and generously helps those in need.’
Mrs. Orr’s last years were very blessed by the love and tender care given to her by the nurses and staff at the Carriage Club.
She is survived by her son, Thomas J. Orr, Jr. and wife, Marcia of Charlotte; daughter, Dot Orr Rose and husband, Randy of St. Michaels, MD; and son, David Johnston Orr and sife, Teddy of Charlotte; grandchildren, T. J. Orr, III, Jay Orr, Amy Orr Smallwood, Ryan Orr, Lynden Orr, Chris Rose and Kelly Burrus; and nephew, Dr. Elliot R. Motley, IV.
A memorial service for Mrs. Orr will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 30 in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.
