Miss Leitzsey Was Veteran Teacher Here

Miss Jessie Louise Leitzsey, a veteran teacher in the public schools of Columbia, died early Thursday morning in the Baptist Hospital.

She had undergone a long period of illness prior to her death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 this afternoon from the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, by the Rev. A. K. Hewitt, D. D., assisted by the Rev. George E. Meetze, D. D. Burial will be in st. Andrew’s Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be E. F. Frick, Sr., Fred Sease, Karl Koon, Aubrey Addy, T. F. Miller, and Greever Derrick. They will meet at the Dunbar Funeral Home at 4 o’clock.

Honorary pallbearers will be Guy L. Varn, Clark Brockman, Edgar Waites, C. B. Harvey, Dr. Claude K. Lindler, Dr. Kirby D. Shealy, Dr. William J. Shealy, F. Karl Shealy, Lonnie Glover, W. L. Shealy, and members of the Church Council of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation.

Miss Leitzsey was born in St. Andrew’s Community, the daughter of the late George F. and Ella Derrick Leitzsey.

Her professional training was received at Mount Amoena Seminary, Mt. Pleasant, N. C., Newberry College, the University of South Carolina, Columbia University and the University of Southern California, Berkeley, Calif. She taught form many years at the old Blossom Street School and later at Hamrick School.

Miss Leitzsey was a charter member of the Lutheran church of the Reformation and, until her ill health, she was superintendent of the Primary Department of the Sunday School. She was a life member of the Women of the Church and was a member of the Forget-Me-Not Garden Club.

Surviving are tow sisters, Mrs. Narvie E. Metze, Columbia, and Miss Pearl Leitzsey, State Park; a brother, J. Ralph Leitzsey, Co. and nephews.
