KANNAPOLIS – Zelma Safrit Kluttz, 100, formerly of West “A” Street, died Saturday (July 23, 2005) at The Country Home in Concord.
Born March 18, 1905, in Rowan County, Mrs. Kluttz was a daughter of the late Luther Martin and Mary Nellie Sifford Safrit. She was reared in Cabarrus County and the Rimer area and attended Rimer School. She graduated from the Mont Amoena Seminary in May 1926 and taught school for several years at the Moose School. She later worked at Cannon Mills Company in the sewing room for 48 years.
She was a resident of Kannapolis until the age of 96, when she moved to The Country Home. She was a lifelong member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church (Prosperity), where she taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of Lutheran Church Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keller Spencer Kluttz, whom she married Dec. 26, 1926; two sisters, Pauline Yost and Janie Kluttz; and three brothers, Cecil, Murray and Clarence Safrit.
Survivors include daughter Dorothy Kluttz Weast and husband Albert G. of Concord; grandchildren Philip G. Weast of Asheville, Kenneth Weast and wife Carol of Arden, W. Ben Weast and wife Beth of Durham and John A. Weast and wife Cathy of Concord; great-grandchildren Emily Weast of Kannapolis, Robert Weast of Charlotte, Melanie and Margo Weast, both of Durham, and Leigha and Rachel Weast, both of Concord; sisters Alma Blackwelder, Margie Poarch and Dot Goodman and husband Marvin; brother James T. Safrit and wife Janey; sister-in-law Alma Rose Safrit; and brother-in-law Reece Kluttz.
Service : 4 p.m. Thursday, Whitley ‘s Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Joseph A. Miller. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation : 3-4 p.m. Thursday, Whitley ‘s Funeral Home. Memorials : Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Educational Endowment Fund, 4500 Rimer Road, Concord, NC 28025.
