John M. Cook married Miss C. Alma Shirey at the home of Luther S. Shirey and his two sisters near Bear Poplar, Rowan County NC on 6/5/1901. The groom was the son of Captain Jonas Cook of Mt. Pleasant NC and was the County clerk for Concord NC. The bride was the youngest daughter of the late Rev. J. D. Shirey DD and a graduate of Mt. Amoena Seminary. Mrs. Cook, 89, Lutheran Leader
Ms. Alma Shirey Cook, 89, at one time treasurer of the Woman’s Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church in America, died at 4 o’clock Thursday morning at the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
Mrs. Cook, a resident of Concord who had been living at the Methodist Home in Charlotte for the past year, was the aunt of Mrs. John Smith of 522 Maupin Avenue and Sister Miriam Shirey, former deaconess of Haven Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at St. James Lutheran Church in Concord Saturday at 2 o’clock by the Rev. Thurmond C. Plexico, pastor, assisted by Dr. L. A. Thomas of Lincolnton. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery at Mt. Pleasant.
Friends will be received from 7 until 9 tonight at Wilkinson’s Funeral Home in Concord.
Mrs. Cook devoted most of her life to the service of the Women’s Missionary Society of the North Carolina Lutheran Synod. She was active with her sister, Miss Julia Shirey, in founding the WMS.
Mrs. Cook held all offices in the state society and, while serving as field secretary, helped start many local societies in the synod.
A teacher, Mrs. Cook was the daughter of the late Rev. J. D. Shirey, who served as president of North Carolina College in Mt. Pleasant, and the wife of John M. Cook, who was Cabarrus clerk of court.
