Martha C. Shirey

MOUNT PLEASANT – Martha Cook Shirey, 78, of 406 N. Main St., sister of Julia Smith of Salisbury, died June 24, 1988, in the Albemarle Unit of the North Carolina Lutheran Home.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, conducted by the Rev. Donald Deal, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Gordon-Peninger Funeral HOme, 307 N. Main St., on Saturday night from 7 to 8:30.

Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, P.O. Box 595, Mount Pleasant, N. C. 28124.

Born Oct. 2, 1909, in Mount Pleasant, she was a daughter of the late Luther Shaeffer and Winona Cook Shirey. She was educated at Mont Amoena Seminary, Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute, and Lenoir-Rhyne College.

A clerk for the U.S. Post Office, she was also employed for a brief time with the FBI. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity.

Survivors include another sister, Salome DeDiego of Mount Pleasant; a brother, Dr. John Luther Shirey of Asheville; and several nieces and nephews.
