Martha Cook Shirey

Who is that coming down the street smiling so? Surely all the boys ought to know. She wears a hat of brown and sometimes blue. Her dresses are of various colors, tins and hues. Now don’t be misled, she is none other than the well known Martha Shirey.

Martha is a Senior at the Institute and is held in high esteem by both the faculty and students. Among the five girls attending the school, you must say that she ranks high in all respects. Her strong points are Science and English. Especially does she like Chemistry for she expects to put this subject to further use. At present Martha is Secretary of the Ludwig Society. The Society too considers her among its best members.

She was born in Mt. Pleasant several years ago and is consequently bound to the town by various chains of faithful friendship and love. Mont Amoena Seminary, of this place, has the honor of having given her early training. Since work has been discontinued at the Seminary Martha has attended school on the hill. She shows a fine record at both places.

There is no doubt that in the future she will be a success because as a nurse she would be unsurpassed. She contemplates the completion of nurse training at a hospital near Philadelphia, Pa. Just a word here, to the wise. When in Philadelphia and you are sick call for Miss Shirey and at a glance relief will follow.

Martha C. Shirey

MOUNT PLEASANT – Martha Cook Shirey, 78, of 406 N. Main St., sister of Julia Smith of Salisbury, died June 24, 1988, in the Albemarle Unit of the North Carolina Lutheran Home.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, conducted by the Rev. Donald Deal, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Gordon-Peninger Funeral HOme, 307 N. Main St., on Saturday night from 7 to 8:30.

Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, P.O. Box 595, Mount Pleasant, N. C. 28124.

Born Oct. 2, 1909, in Mount Pleasant, she was a daughter of the late Luther Shaeffer and Winona Cook Shirey. She was educated at Mont Amoena Seminary, Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute, and Lenoir-Rhyne College.

A clerk for the U.S. Post Office, she was also employed for a brief time with the FBI. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity.

Survivors include another sister, Salome DeDiego of Mount Pleasant; a brother, Dr. John Luther Shirey of Asheville; and several nieces and nephews.
