New Staff Member Will Also Lead Education Work at Allen Street Church.

O. F. Watts, formerly of Laurel, Miss., was installed yesterday as minister of music and education in the Allen Street Baptist church at its morning service by Rev. J. Clyde Yates, pastor. Mr. Watts entered immediately upon his new duties, leading the congregational singing and directing the choir in a special offertory anthem. Miss Ruth Griffin is organist of the Allen Street church.

Mr. Watts, with Mrs. Watts and their small son, arrived in Charlotte last Wednesday from Laurel, where Mr. Watts served the West Laurel Baptist church in a capacity similar to his present position. His duties in the Allen Street church will be advisor in Sunday school work, assistant to the pastor and director of music. Plans are being formed for a fully graded music program operating in the church. In introducing Mr. Watts to the congregation, Mr. Yates read a commendatory letter from Rev. Gerald Riddell, pastor of the Laurel church. At the close of the morning service the congregation greeted Mr. and Mrs. Watts as they stood before the pulpit.

Mr. and Mrs. Watts are native North Carolinians, both originally from Concord, where Mrs. Watts was the former Miss Ezella Stallings. Mr. Watts received his training as a religious worker at the Baptist Bible Institute in New Orleans, La. During student days in New Orleans, he served as assistant at the Franklin Avenue Baptist church. He left there in 1943 for Laurel.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the church year at Allen Street church, and before the morning sermon a budget for the year was accepted by the congregation. Budget figures showed $17,525 for local work and $5,843 for benevolences, a total of $23,368; in addition to which will be the missionary gifts of the women of the church, which last year amounted to more than a thousand dollars, and the church’s and Sunday school’s offering to orphanages, the total of which last year was approximately $800.

Rev. Mr. Yates, pastor of the Allen Street church, is also moderator of the Mecklenburg Missionary Baptist association, having been elected to this office at the annual meeting of the association in September at the First Baptist church here. Mr. Yates had for his sermon theme yesterday “Jesus Watching the Treasury” on the occasion of the church’s accepting its financial goal.
