Mrs. Elberta Riser Harrington, 93, …….. formerly of Monroe, died Wednesday, Nov. 18. Graveside service was at 3:30 pm today in Lakeland Memorial Park, Union County, NC, conducted by the Rev. Keren Humphrey and the Rev. Paul Beatty. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. C. F. (Amy) Humphrey of Decatur; one grandson, John Humphrey, of Herndon, Va; and one granddaughter, the Rev. Keren Humphrey of Newport News, Va. Mrs. Harrington was born in Edgefield County, SC on September 23, 1888, and was the daughter of the late John Elbert and Mamie Luzene Riser. Her husband, D. B. Harrington, died in 1951. She was a graduate of Mont Amoena Seminary in Mt. Pleasant, NC. In the 1920s and 1930s she was a correspondent for the Charlotte Observer. She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Monroe and was president of its Women’s Missionary Society. She also served as president of American Legion Auxilliary to Melvin Deese Post No. 27, and was a member of the Monroe Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Gordon Funeral Service of Monroe was in charge of arrangements.
