Handsome invitation cards have been issued to the marriage of Mr. Luther Shaver Shirey, of Bear Poplar, to Miss Winona Cook, the popular daughter of Capt. Johnas Cook, of Mt. Pleasant, which happy event is to occur on Thursday afternoon, November 21st, at 5 o’clock, in Holy Trinity Lutheran church at Mt. Pleasant. Both the church at Mt. Pleasant. Both the parties are well known in Concord, and many friends thoughout this section extend sincere congratulations in advance.

MRS. WINONA COOK SHIREY

MT. PLEASANT – Mrs. Winona Cook Shirey, age 91, of 406 N. Main St. died Wednesday night, March 19, 1969 following a long period of declining health. A descendant of a pioneer family, she was born July 18, 1877 in Mt. Pleasant, daughter of the late Capt. Jonas Cook and Martha Shimpock Cook. Mrs. Shirey was a lifelong and faithful member of the Lutheran Church of The Holy Trinity, and was a graduate of Mount Amoena (sic) Seminary. Her husband was the late Luther Schaffer Shirey. Surviving are four daughters, Miss Miriam Shirey, Miss Martha Cook Shirey, Mrs. Olneda DeDiego, all of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. John Ellis Smith, Jr., of Salisbury; one son, Dr. John Luther Shirey of Asheville, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity with the Rev. G. A. Phillips officiating with interment in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were the following grandsons: Olneda DeDiego, Jr., Harvey Ellis McComb, III, William Shirey McComb, Joseph Clisson and John Luther Shirey, Jr., also S. Banks Kluttz. Memorials may be made to her church.

Winona Cook Shirey – born July 18, 1877
Graduate Mont Amoena Seminary.
Married Luther S. Shirey, November 21, 1901.
Children: Miriam, Ruth, Salome, Martha, Julia & Luther.
Lived at Bear Poplar, N.C. first 5 years of married life. Miriam & Ruth born there.
Member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church there.
Moved to Mt. Pleasant December 1906 to live with Mrs. Shirey’s father, Capt. Jonas Cook, whose daughter Agnes, who lived with him, was to be married soon.
Active members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Her husband, a prominent layman, did much to rebuild Mont Amoena Seminary – even made the brick & canvassed the Synod for funds.
He died March 19, 1915 – Bright’s Disease & heart trouble.
She was both mother & father to her 6 children, the only boy 5 mos. old when his father died.
A wonderful mother she was!
She outlived all 7 of her sisters and brothers.
Was a widow for 54 years to the day.
She lost her sight in 1964, a “sore trial” for one who had been so active & independent.
Her daughter Miriam came home to care for her in 1964, at time of eye operation.
She died March 19, 1969 – age 91 yrs, 8 mos., 1 day.
